Problem

Black daters are less likely to match with someone on a dating app. When a match occurs, it rarely leads to a first date. Only 23% of users have gone on a date with someone that they met from a dating app. Users believe dating apps are a time-suck, resulting in endless swiping and burnout. Many users say they currently use dating apps as a way to pass the time when they are bored, resulting in frustration from users looking to build true relationships.

Research

To start, I tasked the team (including myself) to spend a month using dating apps. We're all single, so that worked out. The purpose of this exercise was to empathize with our target users, learn more about the experience using dating apps, and identify features of each app.

Utilizing the secondary research of the dating app market and primary research from personal experiences, we were able to make some assumptions to hypothesize ideal features for Zate Nite. From there, I was able to create a user research survey to test those assumptions. We targeted online spaces where our ideal users hung out. This strategy doubled our goal response rate. Coupled with 10 30-minute one-on-one interviews, we were able to develop our initial core set of features.

An in-person event we hosted for singles and couples as a low cost effort to test our concept. We learned there is an opportunity for both businesses that want more traction for events and people looking for something different to do -- whether single or in a relationship.

Key Findings

  • A 2022 survey by Pew Research found that 62% of young adults prefer dating apps that offer both online interaction and opportunities for in-person meetups, highlighting the appeal of hybrid dating platforms.

  • According to a study by the National Black Chamber of Commerce, 70% of Black professionals feel that community-based events and culturally relevant experiences enhance their dating life by providing a sense of belonging and mutual understanding.

  • Research by the Center for Urban Future shows that 58% of Black professionals experience challenges on mainstream dating apps related to racial bias and lack of inclusivity, underscoring the need for tailored dating solutions.

  • A study by LinkedIn shows that 60% of Black professionals value dating apps that also offer networking events, blending personal and professional development opportunities.

Competitive Analysis

This analysis compares our dating app's features with those of key competitors in the market. Our app, which allows singles to match and helps couples and singles find date night locations or events, was evaluated against Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Opentable and Eventbrite.

Our dating app stands out by integrating features from both dating and event discovery platforms, offering a unique hybrid experience. The inclusion of detailed user profiles, advanced matching algorithms, event discovery, location-based suggestions, and exclusive deals sets us apart from competitors. By addressing the gap in the market for comprehensive date planning tools and fostering community engagement, our app provides a holistic solution for singles and couples seeking meaningful connections and memorable date experiences.

Persona

I created our persona and journey map in order to understand and empathize with our users.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped dating preferences, increasing the demand for platforms that facilitate both virtual and safe in-person interactions.

How might we create a seamless transition from virtual to in-person interactions to enhance the dating experience for millennial and Gen-Z Black professionals?

Problem Statement

What are we solving for?

Millennial and Gen-Z Black professionals are seeking meaningful and fulfilling dating experiences that go beyond traditional online interactions. While virtual dating offers convenience and initial connection opportunities, many users face challenges when transitioning to in-person meetings.

To address these issues, we need to create a dating app that not only facilitates virtual connections but also provides a seamless transition to in-person interactions. This includes offering tools and resources for planning dates, integrating community-based events that resonate with Black professionals, and ensuring safe and inclusive environments. By solving for these needs, we can enhance the overall dating experience and help users build more meaningful relationships.

Defining 'Seamless Transition'

Seamless Transition refers to the smooth and effortless progression from virtual interactions to in-person meetings within the dating experience. For millennial and Gen-Z Black professionals, this involves:

  1. Ease of Planning and Coordination: Users can effortlessly move from chatting online to arranging real-life dates using integrated tools and resources that simplify logistics, such as booking venues and making reservations.

  2. Personalized Recommendations: The app provides personalized suggestions for date spots and activities based on user preferences and interests, helping users feel confident and excited about their choices.

  3. Safety and Inclusivity: The app prioritizes user safety and provides culturally relevant and inclusive environments for in-person meetings, which are essential for building trust and comfort.

  4. Support and Guidance: The app offers tips, reminders, and support to help users navigate the transition smoothly, reducing anxiety and enhancing the overall experience.

Solution

A social dating app that combines virtual dating with in-person, community based experiences for millennial and gen-z Black professionals seeking love and fulfilling locations that provide enhanced dating experiences.

Zate Nite is providing space to connect consumers and brands to make collaborative dating experiences. Consumers and users will connect via website and our app to seek out restaurants, museums, entertainment venues and events. When users match online, we provide them a safe space to connect by hosting date night mixers in their respective cities.

Conceptualization

Creating a feature narrative

The Zate Nite dating app aims to revolutionize the dating experience for millennial and Gen-Z Black professionals by seamlessly blending virtual interactions with in-person, community-based experiences. Recognizing the unique needs and cultural preferences of Black professionals, our app provides a comprehensive solution that goes beyond traditional dating platforms. By addressing the gap between online connections and offline meetups, we create opportunities for meaningful and fulfilling relationships.

Date Night and Match Modes

This feature allows users to seamlessly switch between two modes: "Date Night" and "Match". In "Match" mode, users can browse profiles, chat with potential matches, and build connections online. In "Date Night" mode, users can explore date ideas, plan outings, and access tools that help them get off the app to experience real life connections.

Business and Restaurant Pages

Users can explore dedicated pages for local businesses and restaurants, featuring detailed information, user reviews based on a custom set of criteria, and personalized recommendations based on their interests and preferences. These pages help users discover ideal date spots and unique venues that match their tastes.

Curated Events for Singles and Couples

The app offers a calendar of curated events specifically designed for singles and couples. These events range from social mixers and cultural outings to romantic getaways and adventure activities. Users can RSVP, invite matches, and attend events that align with their interests.

Exclusive Experience Offers from Businesses

Users have access to exclusive offers and experiences from partnering businesses, including discounts on dining, entertainment, and travel. These offers are tailored to users' preferences and can be used to enhance their dating experiences.

Information Architecture

Based on the feature narrative and requirements, I began to construct the user experience flow for the match, business page, and event experiences.

Design

The first features I chose to create a prototype for was the dual homepage, business listings, events and matching feature. These flows will involves multiple unique elements when mocked up in high fidelity, which is important for showing the UI range.

The flow needs to allow users to switch between the match landing page and date night landing page. As this will be the MVP version of the app, I focused on a few core features so we can discuss in more detail with the engineering team. Having these initial screens to refer to during team meetings will help with the information architecture process that is up next.

Final designs

Dater onboarding and matching experience

A key feature of this app is the ability to switch between two different modes: match and date night. We wanted to make sure that the user focuses on setting up one initial mode first. This allows them to concentrate on one task at a time, reducing sign-up fatigue. They can set up their preferences for the other mode at any time. This also gives us crucial data about why users are signing up with us in the first place.

Reflections and Outcome

Working on this project was a highly rewarding experience that allowed me to collaborate closely with the founder in conceptualizing and designing an innovative dating app tailored for millennial and Gen-Z Black professionals. From brainstorming ideas to refining the app concept, every step of the process was both challenging and exciting.

One of my favorite aspects of this project was creating a diverse research plan. Using competitor apps provided valuable insights into the market, helping us identify gaps and opportunities for our unique features. Conducting interviews with potential users gave us a deep understanding of their needs and preferences, ensuring that our app would truly resonate with our target audience. Writing surveys further enriched our data pool, allowing us to validate our ideas and make informed design decisions.

Although the app has not yet been launched, the journey so far has been incredibly productive and insightful. The founder now has a robust set of research data and detailed mockups that vividly illustrate the app's potential. These assets have proven invaluable as they are used to attract investors and gain entry into accelerator programs.

Through this project, I have not only honed my skills in user-centered design and research but also experienced the rewarding process of turning an idea into a tangible product. The collaboration with the founder and the positive feedback from our research participants have reinforced my passion for creating solutions that address real user needs and foster meaningful connections.
